AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Akagera Management Company Ltd (AMC Ltd) is a public-private partnership created between the Government of Rwanda through RDB and African Parks Network to manage Akagera National Park. AMC Ltd is seeking a suitable candidate for the position of Conservation Technology Intern.
JOB TITLE: Conservation Technology Intern
REPORTING TO: Conservation Technology Manager & IT Officer
LOCATION: Akagera National Park, Eastern Rwanda
STARTING DATE: 1st July 2024
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Conservation Technology Intern will be responsible for the daily onsite management and application of technology with a key focus on Law Enforcement and conservation activities. This includes programming Conservation Applications, upgrading computer skills and data analysis abilities, maintaining LoRa and radio systems, and working towards a fully integrated conservation technology solution for the park.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
- Maintaining and upgrading reporting applications: Ensure rugged smartphones are maintained and functional, keep applications updated, and maintain camera traps and weather stations.
- Maintain high-quality function of control room reporting structures: Train all control room operators and rangers to meet the standards, ensuring 100% of operators can report Law Enforcement activities.
- Upkeeping, troubleshooting, and maintaining the communication backbone radio system and LoRa system: Limit downtime to a maximum of one week, check system uptime daily, and implement LoRa-based GPS animal tracking.
- Maintenance and upkeep of the Earth Ranger situational awareness system: Ensure all names of subjects are correct and in the right groups, perform daily data checks, and prevent unauthorized access.
- Maintenance and upkeep of the Esri Reporting System: Ensure reporting applications are running, train control room staff on application usage, develop applications as needed, and verify incoming data.
- Internet system management: Limit downtime of the internet system throughout the park, especially at HQ.
- Implementation of new technologies for the park: Stay informed about new conservation technologies and assess their applicability to the park.
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities)
Required:
- A Degree in Information Technology or equivalent.
- Fluent in English and/or French/Kinyarwanda.
- Not afraid of heights.
- Passion for conservation and wildlife
- Advanced knowledge of computers, software applications, and networking skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, ArcGIS, Cybertracker, Mototrbo, and others.
- Experience using conservation technologies.
- Outstanding and demonstrated leadership skills.
- Clean record of conduct (no convictions).
- Prepared to live onsite.
- Physically fit and able to work in the field (fitness and medical check annually).
- Age: Between 20 and 40 years.
Desired:
- Rwandan nationality and from the community would be an added advantage.
- Experience working in protected areas or National Parks.
- Proven experience with conservation applications and technical tools.
