Intern for “Support for sustainable waste management and the circular economy in Rwanda” Programme

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digitalization and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.

Summary of the Project:  The project “Support for sustainable waste management and the circular economy in Rwanda” is working in the core area of “Responsibility for our planet – climate and energy, just transition” The project is building the capacity of public and private actors in the inclusive, climate-smart waste management (WM) and circular economy (CE) sector through technical, organisational and in-process consulting. The results that we are striving for are 1. The empowerment for the implementation of WM and CE capacity of state institutions 2. The enablement of private enterprises to adopt WM and CE approaches and to find new business opportunities as well as to improve the access of SME to finance for investing into sustainable business ideas and 3. Introduce strategies and plans for circularity in the waste management sector in a satellite city.

GIZ would like to recruit the candidate for the internship position for “Support for sustainable waste management and the circular economy in Rwanda” Programme.   

Location: Kigali

Fixed Term: 3 months (renewable upon review)

Position: 1

Start date: 15.10.2023

The Intern performs the following responsibilities and tasks:

1. Responsibilities

The intern supports the project with the following: 

  • Cooperation with and support to the private sector, including business advisory
  • Identifying and stimulating innovative circular approaches in production processes
  • Knowledge management of the project, incl. monitoring of activities
  • Implementation of workshops, studies, planning activities

2. Tasks

Tasks of the intern will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Supporting studies on full cost accounting and recovery of municipal solid waste management services
  • Supporting the mapping of different waste streams, incl. cost implications
  • Supporting activities aimed at improving municipal solid waste management services in satellite cities of Kigali, as part of the cooperation with the private sector
  • Ad-hoc duties and tasks at the request of colleagues and manager

3. Required Qualifications, Competences and Experience

  • University degree in environmental economics OR industrial economics OR circular agro-economics
  • Fluent in Kinyarwanda and English
  • Ability to work on a conceptual level
  • Interest in circular economy and waste management
  • Very good working knowledge with MS Office and Microsoft Teams
