About You and the Role
We are looking for a Senior Database Administrator who will be focusing more on our database environment with expertise in MS SQL with Postgres SQL knowledge. You will have responsibility for administrating, monitoring, and troubleshooting a production environment’s database servers and associated infrastructure. You will ensure 100% uptime, plan future capacity requirements, maintain security, and apply updates. 
Additionally, you will solve exciting technical challenges by analyzing, troubleshooting, and designing vital services, platforms, and infrastructure while always thinking about reliability, scalability, resilience, security, and performance.

What you will do

Database Management

  • Continually develop and implement strategies and procedures for effective data management.
  • Create rules and procedures for data sharing.
  • Oversee and manage staff members in the daily use of data systems.
  • Guarantee adherence to legal and company regulations.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate information and data systems that could affect analytical results.
  • Assess system performance and make recommendations for software, hardware, and data storage improvements that guarantee stability and efficiency.
  • Built, tested, deployed, and managed data platforms, including databases, ETL, Data Warehouse, storage, monitoring, etc.
  • Continually develop data management strategies.
  • Assist with recognizing and upholding digital security systems to protect delicate information.
  • Understand and transform the company data to drive value for the government and citizens.
  • Manage data flow from apps to operational databases to reporting databases and data warehouses with automated periodic archival to guarantee the efficiency of operational databases.

Technical Process Lead

  • Lead the data team and be responsible for their task formulation and execution.
  • Daily database performance monitoring, optimization, and tuning to ensure maximum availability and high performance.
  • Perform proactive database maintenance, upgrades, monitoring, indexing, backup, and recovery activities.
  • Ensure there is a tested BCP and DRP for all Company data platforms.
  • Strengthen the security of the Company data platforms and ensure they conform to audit best practices.
  • Manage / Plan/optimize for the growth of Irembo Databases.
  • Will be expected to be hands-on in maintaining site availability for all databases.
  • Experience with ETL tools and processes (Ex, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, Apache Nifi, Apache Spark / Spark Streaming, Apache Pinot, KSQL, Druid) or any other relevant ETL tool.
  • Recruited, nurtured, and developed data team juniors.

You will be a great fit if you have

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT. Additional specialized training/certification in database and data management will be a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in related SQL / No SQL / ETL Processes, with at least 2 years in leading a team.
  • Experience working with database engines PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including in-memory engines Redis and Elasticsearch.
  • Comfortable backing up, restoring, indexing, tuning, and monitoring performance, as well as approving, rejecting, or advising on schema changes of database systems.
  • Ability to decipher and organize large amounts of data from varying data sources.
  • Experience with programming and organizing software engineering projects using Python or Java programming languages, with Python preferred.
  • Experience with database procedural languages such as PL/pgSQL.
  • Experience with system architecture.
  • Experience with database audits.
  • Analytical capability with good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to explain complex problems in non-technical terms.
  • Ability to adapt to a new or changing environment, eager to learn from mistakes, and always share hard-won lessons.
  • Experience and comfortable working with open-source database tools.
  • Experience with versioning tools.
