About WCS-EAMWIO Program Overview

The East Africa, Madagascar, and Western Indian Ocean (EAMWIO) is one of WCS’s 13 Global Regional Programs, spanning Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Madagascar. This rapidly growing program has a diverse and expanding portfolio of donors, partners, and projects. The region presents a set of complex conservation challenges to biodiversity and wildlife habitats. WCS field programs are addressing these through several initiatives including protected area management, community engagement, sustainable livelihoods, policy reform and sustainable financing. The WCS EAMWIO Region is based in WCS’s Africa hub in Kigali, Rwanda, which hosts a growing team of technical specialists and supports country programs and field office initiatives across the continent.

Role Purpose: 

The Communications Intern will provide support to the Communications Department in the EAMWIO Region Country program teams mainly through collecting significant change stories as well as documentation, event coverage through photography, social media updating and content gathering. S/he will work with the Regional Communications Manager and a team of regional colleagues to raise awareness and visibility of the region.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in documenting projects and creatively packaging EAMWIO’s communications and knowledge products for various target audiences
  • Support to review, update and monitor regional and country program’s website content
  • Support internal communication including the production of internal updates and other materials
  • Build and grow the country’s social media channels by developing dynamic content such as short-form videos, infographics, images, and educational content among others
  • Support to develop outreach materials such as factsheets, brochures, flyers, and other briefs
  • Support to design and implement audio-visual coverage and production
  • Support in information and knowledge management including organizing and managing photos, reports, publications and other knowledge assets
  • Learn and support planning, manage and document events, meetings and other outreach activities.
  • Participate and offer logistical support in various project meetings, workshops and field visits

Minimum Requirements and Role Skills:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in communications, media, journalism, public relations, or related field
  • One year of experience in communications, preferably in the humanitarian, or development sector is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other web-based technologies is a plus
  • Good oral and written English
  • Attention to detail and good organization skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision and work with tight deadlines.

  • Knowledge or interest in conservation
  • Good photography and videography skills
