Mission/Core purpose of the Job

To serve as MTN Rwanda's technical accounting authority while safeguarding the integrity, timeliness and quality of financial reporting. The role is accountable for IFRS compliance, technical accounting judgments, listed-company financial reporting, and supporting the daily, weekly and monthly reporting cadence to ensure delivery of MTN Rwanda Plc (that is, GSM and Mobile Money) and Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE) reporting obligations, while proactively monitoring performance against the business scorecard and budget.

Key Performance Areas

Key Performance Areas:

1. Technical Accounting Leadership

  • Act as the company's subject matter expert on IFRS and emerging accounting standards.
  • Prepare technical accounting papers and accounting position memoranda for complex transactions.
  • Provide authoritative accounting guidance to Finance and business stakeholders.
  • Lead engagement with external auditors on technical accounting matters.
  • Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures manuals.
  • Monitor changes in IFRS and evaluate business impacts.

2. IFRS Governance and Specialised Technical Areas:

IFRS 16 – Lease Accounting

  • Own lease accounting for tower, network, office and site leases.
  • Lead lease accounting remediation, restatement and compliance initiatives.
  • Ensure accurate recognition, measurement and disclosure of right-of-use assets and lease liabilities.

IFRS 15 – Revenue Recognition

  • Own revenue recognition policies across voice, data, bundles, connection fees, roaming, interconnect and device financing arrangements.
  • Provide accounting leadership on Mobile Money revenue streams and principal-versus-agent assessments.

IFRS 18 – Presentation & Disclosure Readiness

  • Lead MTN Rwanda's IFRS 18 readiness programme.
  • Conduct impact assessments and develop implementation roadmaps ahead of the effective date of 2027.
  • Other Key Technical Areas
  • Lead impairment assessments for network assets, fiber infrastructure, spectrum license, cash-generating units (CGUs) in accordance with IAS 36.
  • Technical oversight over accounting for financial instruments under IFRS 9, Intangible Assets under IAS 38 and foreign currency disclosures under IAS 21.
  • Provide technical leadership on deferred tax matters in accordance with IAS 12.
  • Support MTN Rwanda’s sustainability and climate related reporting under IFRS S1 and IFRS S2.
  • New IFRS Standards and Amendments – advise management on their impact and coordinate their implementation across the business, including related training.

3. Financial Reporting and Close Management

  • Support and safeguard the daily, weekly and monthly reporting timetable.
  • Monitor reporting of risks and escalating issues before deadlines are impacted.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities.
  • Coordinate compliance with MTN Group reporting deadlines and submission requirements.
  • Review financial statement disclosures for completeness and accuracy.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the reporting process.

4. Scorecard and Performance Reporting Support

  • Track actual performance against approved budget and scorecard targets.
  • Identify, analyse and communicate material variances on a proactive basis.
  • Ensure accounting treatment underpinning scorecard metrics remains technically sound.
  • Support leadership reporting by highlighting financial risks and opportunities before reporting deadlines.

5. Listed Company Reporting and Corporate Governance

  • Lead compliance with Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE) financial reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate interim and annual financial reporting obligations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable disclosure requirements and governance standards.
  • Support Board, Audit Committee and regulatory reporting requirements.

6. GSM / MoMo Accounting Workstream

  • Lead technical accounting assessments linked to GSM and Mobile Money operational structures.
  • Support transfer-pricing accounting implications and separation of accounting requirements.
  • Provide accounting leadership on strategic business restructuring initiatives affecting GSM and Mobile Money operations.

7. Audit and Risk Management

  • Lead resolution of technical accounting matters raised by internal and external auditors.
  • Ensure implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Conduct accounting risk assessments and strengthen financial controls.
  • Support maintenance of a strong control environment. 

Experience

  • 8–10 years' post-qualification experience.
  • At least 5 years in technical accounting or financial reporting.
  • Experience in a listed-company reporting environment.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing IFRS-compliant financial statements as well as managing financial close and reporting cycles.
  • Experience interacting with external auditors and regulators. 

Education Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Commerce.
  • Master's Degree (MBA/MSc Finance) is advantageous.
  • Professional Qualification such as ACCA, CPA Or equivalent internationally recognised accounting qualification.
