About the role

Ripple Effect has been working in Rwanda for over the last 23 years and has ongoing projects in 10 districts. Ripple Effect Rwanda is launching a new project, RESTORE, funded by the Isle of Man.

We are looking for an experienced person to drive and transport Ripple Effect staff and other authorised passengers, goods and services, always ensuring the suitable mechanical and security condition of the vehicles in line with Ripple Effect policies.

Role purpose

To drive and transport Ripple Effect staff and other authorised passengers, goods and services, always ensuring the suitable mechanical and security condition of the vehicles in line with Ripple Effect policies.

Key responsibilities

  • Transportation of passengers, goods and services    
  • Drive staff and visitors using Ripple Effect vehicles to specified destinations such as offices and the field.
  • Deliver packages, goods, and mail to specified destinations and offices as required.
  • Assist in handling and managing Ripple Effect guests and visitors in line with training, meetings, workshops, field visits and programme review exercises.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all passengers (e.g., safety belts) before the start of any journey, and at all times while in the vehicle. 
  • Vehicle maintenance and reporting    
  • Check on a regular basis the vehicle condition (e.g., engine oil, water, battery, brakes, tyre pressure, licence, third party insurance, technical control certificate etc) prior to any journey. 
  • Ensure vehicles are kept clean, secure and receive timely and adequate repair and maintenance.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely servicing of all movements, repairs as well as properly recording fuel consumption in the vehicle logbook.
  • Report all minor and major damages and accidents on the vehicle that need to be addressed to the supervisor as per Ripple Effect vehicle policies.

Other duties

  • Ensure compliance with Ripple Effect policies and all relevant legislation.
  • Act at all times according to Ripple Effect’s values and in support of its Africa Forward Together approach.
  • To undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by the line manager.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A valid driving permit.
  • A relevant certificate of education (minimum a secondary school certificate).

Experience and knowledge

Essential:

  • Strong experience driving vehicles.
  • Experience of field work with ability to drive on difficult terrains and long distances.
  • Experience of defensive driving.

Skills and attributes

Essential:

  • Good communication, listening and interpersonal skills.
  • A good command of English and the main local language in the country based.
  • The ability to quickly assess and take action for self and the safety of people or goods transported in situations such as accidents, emergencies or any security related matters.
  • Willing to work flexibly to travel long distances and at times working late hours.
  • Commitment to Ripple Effect’s mission.

About you

Someone with a secondary school certificate and valid driving permit, preferably with experience working with NGOs in rural settings.
