The Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) is a unique and innovative English language undergraduate institution dedicated to preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders of Rwanda and East Africa. Students at RICA engage in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities emphasizing Conservation Agriculture and One Health principles, oral and written communication, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

In an experiential learning environment, students develop the knowledge and experience necessary for a wide range of careers in agriculture. Students at RICA experience the six Enterprises including Dairy, Poultry and Swine, Food Processing, Row and Forage Crops, Vegetable and Fruit Crops, Irrigation and Mechanization.

The curriculum is designed to incorporate threads of Innovation, Conservation, One Health Systems Thinking, and Entrepreneurship. Communication, One Health Systems Thinking, and Entrepreneurship are woven throughout the curriculum.

All RICA graduates will be innovative problem solvers able to operate farms and ranches, start agribusinesses, assume management roles in cooperatives, NGOs, and other agricultural enterprises, serve their communities as extension agents and technical and policy experts, or assume positions of agricultural leadership in Rwanda.

 POSITION: RESEARCH ASSISTANT

 PROJECT: MANGO VARIETIES ADAPTATION

DURATION : 3 years

 Position Overview

The Research Assistant will support research focusing on assessing adaptation of mango varieties in Rwanda. The role involves technical, administrative, and analytical support for studying mango biodiversity and characterization and investigating optimal environmental conditions for mango cultivation and proper orchard management. The selected candidate must be capable of conducting rigorous scientific research and handling data analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in designing and implementing research protocols for mango variety assessment.
• Conduct comprehensive field surveys for data collection.
• Participate in field research activities including sample collection.
• Support laboratory analyses related to mango variety research.
• Collect, organize and manage research data with use of specialized research software.
• Perform statistical analyses on collected mango variety data.
• Prepare comprehensive research reports and scientific documentation.
• Support the preparation of scientific manuscript.
• Collaborate with local agricultural stakeholders and community partners in relation with the research.

RUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors of Science degree in horticulture, forestry, plant botany, or Crop sciences
• Proven experience of at least 3 yearsof conducting field research
• Practical experience in agricultural research methodology.
• Excellent analytical and data management skills.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis software.
• Knowledge of interpreting statistical analysis data.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

• Fluency in speaking and writing English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts
• Strong organizational skills with ability to manage time and workload prioritization
