Mission/Core purpose of the Job
Responsible for leading the design, documentation, and technical governance of enterprise-grade applications and platforms at MTN Rwanda. This role is the primary owner of architectural quality, ensuring every solution is scalable, secure, well-documented, and aligned to business strategy and the Ambition 2030 digital agenda.
The Manager, Solutions Architecture bridges business vision and technical execution, working across product, engineering, and operations to deliver customer-facing digital channels (USSD, web, mobile, APIs), internal operational systems, and revenue-generating digital products. A critical mandate is establishing deep, structured, and maintainable system documentation down to the lowest architectural level.
Key Performance Areas
- Architecture & System Design: Design scalable, secure, and high-performance solutions for customer digital channels, internal operational systems, and revenue-generating digital products.
- Define end-to-end system architecture covering application, integration, data, and infrastructure layers; produce high-level design (HLD) and low-level design (LLD) documentation.
- Define API contracts, integration patterns, and event-driven architectures; lead architecture review boards (ARBs) and technical design sessions; ensure architectural decisions are traceable from business requirement to implementation.
- Documentation & Governance (Critical Focus Area): Establish, enforce, and continuously improve architecture documentation standards.
- Ensure every solution includes component diagrams, sequence diagrams, deployment diagrams, data models, API specifications, and infrastructure specifications.
- Implement and maintain Architecture Decision Records (ADRs); maintain a centralised architecture repository accessible to all engineering squads; define documentation templates, review checklists, and quality gates for architectural artefacts; drive knowledge-sharing and architectural education across teams.
- Technology & Stack Leadership: Define backend architecture standards using Kotlin/Java (Spring Boot, reactive frameworks, microservices); guide frontend architecture (React, TypeScript); design database schemas and optimise PostgreSQL performance; define and enforce standards for REST API design, authentication (OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT), caching (Redis), and event-driven architecture (Kafka).
- Lead monolith-to-microservices modernisation initiatives.
- Ensure systems are cloud-ready and containerised (Docker, Kubernetes); define IaC standards (Terraform, Ansible). Telecom Domain Architecture.
- Design systems integrating with billing, CRM, provisioning, USSD/SMS gateways, payment gateways, and FinTech platforms.
- Ensure high availability and low latency for telecom-grade systems; implement observability best practices (structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, alerting).
- Define DR and business continuity architecture for critical systems.
- Ensure compliance with RURA regulatory requirements and MTN Group standards.
- Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Developers; mentor and coach developers and junior architects; conduct design reviews and code quality oversight.
- Provide technical leadership across multiple squads; facilitate architecture community of practice (CoP) sessions; conduct regular architecture capability assessments.
- Security & Compliance: Embed security-by-design principles; conduct threat modelling and architectural risk assessments; define RBAC and encryption standards.
- Ensure compliance with telecom regulatory and data protection requirements; own architectural compliance reviews against MTN Group information security policies.
- Innovation & Revenue Enablement: Identify and propose opportunities to build internally initiated digital revenue products; propose scalable architectures for new revenue streams, API monetization and partner integrations; research and recommend emerging technologies.
- Build and maintain a technology radar for MTN Rwanda IT.
- Prepares and submits monthly architecture progress reports to the Senior Manager, Architecture and Design.
Experience
- 4+ years of software engineering experience. 3+ years in solution or enterprise architecture roles.
- Proven experience designing distributed systems at scale. Deep knowledge of microservices and event-driven architecture.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
- Telecom industry experience is a strong advantage.
Education Background
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- TOGAF 9 Certified or equivalent enterprise architecture certification required. Fluent in English.
