Mission/Core purpose of the Job
- Responsible for leading the credit and collections function across MTN Rwanda, managing credit risk and maximizing recovery of receivables across postpaid, device financing and enterprise.
- Drives collection strategies, credit policy, provisioning and recovery performance to protect revenue, reduce bad debt and improve cash flow, while treating customers fairly.
- Partners with Finance, Commercial, Sales, Corporate Services and external agencies to embed effective, compliant credit and collections practices aligned to MTN R standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Performance Areas
- Credit & Collections Strategy: Define and execute credit-control and collections strategies across postpaid, device, enterprise and fintech portfolios.
- Credit Policy & Risk Management: Develop and maintain credit policies, limits, scoring and risk-assessment frameworks to manage exposure.
- Credit Vetting & Onboarding Controls: Oversee credit vetting, limit-setting and onboarding controls for new postpaid, device and lending customers.
- Collections Operations & Recovery: Lead end-to-end collections (early, late and recovery stages) to maximise recovery and minimise losses.
- Dunning & Treatment Strategy: Design and manage the dunning cycle, segmentation and treatment strategies across channels (SMS, call, field and legal).
- Field Collections Management: Coordinate field collections and customer visits where required, ensuring conduct and compliance standards.
- Restructuring & Payment Plans: Manage payment-plan, restructuring and settlement arrangements to support recovery and customer retention.
- Bad-Debt & Provisioning Management: Manage bad-debt provisioning, write-offs and impairment in line with policy and accounting standards (IFRS 9).
- Receivables & DSO Management: Monitor and reduce days-sales-outstanding and aged receivables across portfolios.
- Cash Application & Reconciliation: Oversee accurate cash allocation, account reconciliation and billing-dispute resolution to support clean collections.
- Monitor credit exposure and concentration risk by segment, product, and key accounts; recommend risk-mitigation actions such as deposits, revised payment terms, and credit limit adjustments.
- Approve or provide oversight for high-value credit decisions, including large enterprise, government, and wholesale accounts, and any significant restructurings or settlements.
- Early-Warning & Portfolio Monitoring: Establish early-warning indicators and portfolio monitoring to detect and act on emerging risk.
- Agency & Legal Recovery Management: Manage external collection agencies and legal/litigation recovery; ensure performance, compliance, SLAs and cost-effectiveness.
- Fraud & Leakage Prevention: Identify and address credit fraud, leakage and abuse in collaboration with Risk and Fraud teams.
- Reporting & Portfolio Analytics: Produce credit and collections reporting, forecasts and portfolio analytics for leadership and risk/audit committees.
- Oversee the processing of bad debt journals, refunds, and escalated accounts on hold.
- Conduct regular reviews of accounts receivable with the collections team, ensuring problem receivables are properly addressed and uncollected accounts are escalated appropriately.
- Drive strong integration between collections, credit risk, and commercial retention strategy treating the collections function as a revenue recovery and customer retention lever, not solely a debt recovery unit.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to address structural drivers of late payment, high churn, and bad debt (e.g., product design, contract terms, billing accuracy, onboarding processes) and drive policy or process improvements.
- Ensure collections practices are ethical, fair, and consistent with MTN's customer-centric values, preserving long-term customer relationships and brand reputation.
- Maintain bad debt, credit note provisions, and write-offs within targets set by senior management.
- Negotiate extensions with clients or approve debt write-offs to minimize the company's potential loss of income.
- Monitor ageing of debtor’s books ensuring accuracy, reduced overdue amounts and collections levels maintained
- Compliance & Customer Fairness: Ensure collections comply with regulatory, consumer-protection and data-protection requirements and treat customers fairly.
- Systems & Automation: Optimize collections systems, dialers, workflow and scoring to improve efficiency and recovery.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Commercial, Sales, Customer Experience and Corporate Services to align credit, collections and customer outcomes.
- Leadership & People Management: Lead and develop the credit and collections team and agencies; build a performance-driven, ethical and accountable culture.
- Prepares and submits monthly credit and collections performance reports to finance leadership.
Experience
- 8+ years’ experience with 4+ years in credit, collections or receivable management leadership, preferably in telecoms, banking or services.
- Proven track record in reducing bad debt and DSO and improving recovery.
Education Background
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, Business or related field. Professional qualification (ACCA, CPA, CFA) or a Master’s/MBA an advantage.
- Credit/risk certifications are advantageous.
- Fluent in English; Kinyarwanda an advantage.
