AUTO-ELECTRICIAN (1 position)

The Auto-electrician reports to the Site Manager or Maintenance Coordinator.

Job summary / Overview

The Auto-Electrician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the electrical systems and components of heavy machinery, vehicles, and equipment used in drilling operations. This includes troubleshooting electrical faults, wiring, and electronic systems in rigs, trucks, compressors, and other mobile or stationary equipment. They ensure that all electrical components meet operational safety and efficiency standards while adhering to company policies and industry regulations. The role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in remote and challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

Electrical Maintenance & Repairs:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical faults in heavy machinery, vehicles, and drilling equipment.
  • Maintain and repair alternators, starter motors, lighting systems, and wiring in drilling rigs, trucks, compressors, and generators.

System Troubleshooting:

  • Test and troubleshoot electrical circuits, components, and electronic control systems.
  • Identify malfunctions using diagnostic tools and recommend solutions.

Preventive Maintenance:

  • Conduct routine checks on electrical systems to prevent downtime.
  • Replace damaged or worn-out electrical parts to ensure equipment reliability.

Installation & Upgrades:

  • Install and upgrade electrical systems, including lighting, power systems, and electronic monitoring devices in machinery.
  • Ensure new installations comply with industry standards and safety protocols.

Compliance & Safety:

  • Adhere to safety protocols while working on live circuits and high-voltage systems.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, environmental standards, and industry regulations.

Recordkeeping:

  • Maintain detailed records of repairs, replacements, and inspections for auditing and operational purposes.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with mechanics, drillers, and other maintenance staff to address equipment needs.
  • Provide input to management on potential upgrades and improvements to electrical systems.

Required Education and work experience,

  • High School Diploma Auto-Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field or Certificate in vocational training in automotive electrical systems or heavy equipment.
  • Advanced training in electrical diagnostics, electronic control systems, or high-voltage systems.
  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or CAN-bus systems is an advantage.
  • Minimum 5 yearsof experience as an auto-electrician, preferably working with heavy vehicles, machinery, or equipment.
  • Experience in diagnosing and repairing electrical systems for trucks, drilling rigs, compressors, and generators.
  • Previous Hands-on experience in the mining, drilling, or oil and gas industry with high-voltage systems and electronic diagnostic tools.

Professional Qualities and Skills

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Skilled in using electrical diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, fault diagnostic software).
  • Knowledge of alternators, starter motors, lighting systems, and electronic controls.

Safety Awareness:

  • Familiarity with workplace safety practices, especially when handling live circuits and high-voltage systems.

Communication:

  • Ability to clearly explain electrical issues, solutions, and recommendations to supervisors and team members.

Physical Fitness:

  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment and working in confined spaces.

Time Management:

  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently to minimize downtime in drilling operations.
