Mission/Core purpose of the Job

  • Responsible for leading engineering automation and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) capability across MMRL Rwanda’s technology estate.
  • Drives DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, test automation, and intelligent automation to accelerate delivery and reduce manual effort, while building and operating AI/ML platforms (MLOps) that turn data into production-grade, responsible AI solutions.
  •  Partners with engineering, data, product, cybersecurity, and business teams to embed automation and AI that improve reliability, efficiency, and competitiveness across telecom, fintech, and digital services, in line with MMRL Group’s data and AI ambitions and ethical/regulatory standards.

Key Performance Areas

  • DevOps & CI/CD: Own engineering delivery pipelines; drive continuous integration, continuous delivery, automated build, release and deployment to accelerate and stabilise delivery across teams.
  • Automation Engineering: Drive Infrastructure-as-Code, test automation, and intelligent/robotic process automation to reduce manual effort, toil and operational risk.
  • AI/ML Platform & MLOps: Build and operate the AI/ML platform and MLOps lifecycle – data preparation, feature stores, model training, deployment, monitoring, retraining and governance.
  • AI Solution Delivery & Use-Case Management: Identify, prioritise and deliver high-value AI/ML use cases across customer experience, fintech, network and operations; ensure measurable business outcomes.
  • Responsible AI & Model Governance: Establish responsible, ethical and explainable AI practices; ensure model risk management, bias monitoring, transparency and compliance with data protection and regulatory requirements.

  • Reliability & Engineering Excellence: Embed SRE and quality engineering practices; drive observability, automated testing and self-healing to improve reliability and reduce incidents.
  • Data & Feature Engineering Enablement: Partner with data platform teams to ensure quality, governed data and reusable features for AI/ML at scale.
  • Security & Compliance: Embed security-by-design and secure ML practices; protect models, pipelines and data; support audits and regulatory compliance.
  • Vendor & Partner Management: Manage AI, automation and tooling vendors and partners; ensure SLAs, security and value; drive performance reviews and cost optimisation.
  • Leadership & People Management: Lead and develop automation engineers, ML engineers, data scientists and DevOps engineers; build a culture of experimentation, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Prepares and submits monthly automation and AI performance and value reports to technology leadership.
  • Lead and develop automation engineers, DevOps engineers, ML engineers and data scientists.
  • Establish ways of working, standards and on call/support models for automation and AI services.
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching and capability development.

Experience

  • 10+ years of technology experience, with 5+ years in senior software engineering, DevOps/automation, or AI/ML leadership roles.
  • Strong experience building CI/CD pipelines, automation, and operating AI/ML platforms (MLOps) in production.
  • Proven track record delivering measurable, responsible AI solutions and automation outcomes.
  • Experience in telecom, fintech, or high-volume digital environments is an advantage.

Education Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field. Master’s Degree or an MBA is an advantage.
  • Relevant certifications in AI/ML, cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), or DevOps. Fluent in English.
